What is Conventional Landscaping vs. Ecological Landscaping?

Essentially, conventional approaches focus on "controlling nature" and often utilize modified plant specimen. While this can appeal to the traditional sense of visually attractive landscaping, it can create several costly problems.

These problems can include: propagating invasive species, long-term maintenance needs, shorter plant life-span due to incapacity to withstand the range of weather, disease, shallow root systems, etc. These issues are cyclical..

In contrast, ecological landscaping works in cooperation with nature. Native plants are an important component insure your hard earned investment in a new landscape. They are most resilient to the range of weather in our area and the particular soil your residential or commercial property is built on. Their root systems establish with surprising depth, allowing them to soak up a lot of water and withstand drought in order to choke out the free space that weeds would normally fill. It is sustainable for people, birds, pollinators, and wildlife.

Is a No-Maintenance Landscape Possible?

To answer the question, we'll glance at the process first. The first two to three years post-planting require diligent garden maintenance to cultivate the desired outcome. Where sun meets bare soil, weeds will sprout. If weeds take over it inhibits the growth of the desired plants. Therefore, regular upkeep during the maturation process is important.

At the time of full growth, it is reasonable to expect the garden beds to be full of mature plants with deep, interwoven root systems. Pesky weeds may still appear in spots, but by this time the garden is cultivated into the flourishing community of plant life. In turn, the opportunistic weeds have few opportunities.

After this point, the landscape will be low-maintenance compared to conventional landscape beds. Just like your home and car are never maintenance-free, regular upkeep is to be expected. The quality of the investment and goals of the client determines the level of ongoing maintenance required.

The Investment Protection Plan is a must-have for all new garden installations throughout the first two or three years. The greater the quality of your landscape investment, the greater the outcomes.

What are Native Plants?

Native plants are those that developed in a particular local ecosystem naturally without human involvement.

Why Use Native Plants?

  • Their return on investment:

    • Expect investment dollars to compound through natural plant propagation from seed, rather than more dollars spent

    • Resilience to native pests, diseases, and weather

    • Mutual benefit within their ecosystem for birds, pollinators, soil, and other plant life means multiplication

  • Their low-er maintenance nature:
    • At maturity, they cover the ground and block many undesirable weeds

    • Much deeper root systems equals no reliance on supplemental watering, meaning less of your time/money spent

  • Their health benefits:

    • Beauty to enjoy from strong seasonal interest (color, bloom, texture, and plant health)

    • Seasonally supports birds and pollinators (butterflies and bees), adding site and sound appeal while directly benefiting the abundance of local food farms sourcing our local restaurants and groceries

    • Natural pollutant clean-up through their root system

    • Carbon dioxide extraction through their bountiful leaves and conversion to fresh oxygen
